Although the price of Bitcoin has shown signs of stability, investor sentiment still seems very low. For example, the Bitcoin Fear & Greed Index was at just 10 on March 8 (on a 30-day moving average basis), the lowest since mid-2022 in the aftermath of the Terra/Luna collapse (see chart).

The Bitcoin Fear & Greed Index produced by Alternative.me is a composite of market and fundamental indicators designed to be a barometer of investor sentiment. While there is no perfect measure of Bitcoin sentiment, the Fear & Greed Index does a good job of capturing the major swings in the market over time. Its low level today likely reflects the recent high-volume selloff, rising Bitcoin dominance, and higher realized price volatility. Bitcoinโ€™s 30-day realized volatility reached as high as 83% on March 4, compared to an average of 40% in 2025.ยน

Since 2018, the Bitcoin Fear & Greed Index (on a 30-day moving average basis) has only fallen below 15 on three occasions (Dec 2018, Apr 2020, and May 2022). The first two instances were close to the local lows. In 2022, valuations took another leg down after the FTX bankruptcy before bottoming.

Key takeaway: While price has stabilized, sentiment has not. Depressed market sentiment may be consistent with compelling risk/reward for longer-term oriented investors looking to allocate to digital assets.
