The financial system of the future will look much different than it does today. Through innovations like stablecoins and tokenization, blockchain technology is changing the way we make payments, save, and invest. The internet greatly reduced barriers to the flow of information and transformed the way the world communicates. Similarly, blockchains reduce barriers to the flow of money and assets and, in our view, will be the foundation of a financial system with much broader access, more functionality, and lower costs.

The Ethereum blockchain is leading this transformation today. In the physical world, Ethereum is a network of computers running open-source software to process financial transactions. But conceptually Ethereum is much more than that—a new type of digital infrastructure for new forms of digital commerce. As we explain in Class 2 of the Grayscale Institute’s Digital Asset Investing Fundamentals Course, think of Ethereum as an “operating system” on which a variety of applications are being built.

Among all other smart contract platforms, Ethereum is:

  • #1 in Stablecoins: Around half of all stablecoins are on Ethereum—nearly $140 billion (Exhibit 1). Stablecoins give Ethereum’s global users a way to securely save in Dollars.
  • #1 in Tokenized Assets: About 40% of tokenized assets are on Ethereum, more than twice the amount on the next largest network. Issuers include BlackRock, WisdomTree, and Invesco.
  • #1 in Applications: There are more than 2,000 applications on the Ethereum blockchain, and another 6,000 on its ecosystem of Layer 2 networks.
  • #1 in Developers: Maintaining the pace of innovation requires software developers, and there are more developers working on Ethereum than on any other network.
  • #1 in Investment Products: For portfolio exposure to ETH (the Ethereum network’s native token), US investors can choose from exchange-traded products (ETPs) with $13+ billion in total assets and CME-listed futures with $3+ billion in open interest.

Redesigning the financial system will require many distinct technologies, but the base layer will be blockchains like Ethereum.

Key Takeaway: Ethereum is the leading platform for blockchain-based innovations like stablecoins and tokenization. Investing in ETH provides exposure to the growth of this emerging financial infrastructure.
