The debate about the blockchain’s quantum readiness is heating up again. Last week, Coinbase created a quantum advisory council, Ethereum detailed a “quantum readiness” strategy, and venture capital investor a16z published a report on quantum risk for blockchains.
Despite the growing public debate, we do not see quantum computing as an immediate problem for the public blockchain. Our view: Quantum computing is not expected to become a reality until at least the next decade, giving the industry plenty of time to adapt and adjust. We also think that different blockchains will react and adjust differently, with Ethereum, for example, likely being more “quantum-ready” than Bitcoin at this stage.
Key Takeaway: True quantum risk is far away. Smart long-term investors can add to their allocations when short-term sentiment is poor. This may be one of those times.
